I brought Rudy home about 30 minutes ago. Thanks to everyone who contacted me to report sightings, to make me aware of dogs that could have been him, but weren't, and to give their good wishes and suggestions. Thanks are not enough for Kim and Spencer who saw him, checked Craig's List, called me, waited outside to keep track of him until I could get there, and then spent an hour or more helping me to round him up and catch him. Thanks are also due to the neighbors who helped Kim and Spencer.

Rudy is a little thin, very dirty, and has a slight limp, but he is alive, safe, and happy to be home.

"Banjo", English Springer Spaniel, Liver/white, Santa Clara - Found!

Banjo is a liver and white. two year old English Springer Spaniel. He is wearing a collar with current ID tags, and he is microchipped.

There were a couple of sightings of Banjo after he went missing.

We had a searched scheduled for first thing the next morning.

I received a call late in the afternoon that Banjo had been found. Somebody found him hiding him in some bushes several miles from home, and they called the number on his ID tags.

The Akita that has been missing since before Thanksgiving has been found. He is safe and sound. Thank you for all the people that help find him and that kept a look out on Craigslist for me. I don't know how to thank you. I was begining to loose hope. My son is so happy his dog is home. Thank you again.

Search details:
Max is a four year old, unneutered, black and brown Akita. When he went missing, he was not wearing a collar, but he was wearing a red nylon body harness. He is microchipped.

There were no sightings of Max after he went missing.

I spoke to Max's person about doing a search, but she had decided to not do a search at that time.

A few days later, I was searching through Craigslist for various ads in the Lost and Found section, and I saw an ad for an Akita for sale. The Akita looked identical to Max, and the ad said the person had found Max several weeks prior, right around the time that Max originally went missing, and the two locations were identical.

I immediately called Max's person and told her about the ad. She called the number in the ad, and she had Max home within an hour.

To those of you with Lost pets (family members)...

Never give up hope!!! Our Sancho had been missing since Tuesday 11/29 with no collar...From the moment he went missing we dedicated 24/7 to bringing him home.

On Monday 12/5...We got a phone call that changed everything. An Oakland local (who owned his own rescue pet) Had seen one of the hundreds of flyers we posted. He said he was sad all week walking around and seeing all of our search efforts. He decided to start keeping an eye out for him everyday while he was walking his pup lucky. On Saturday, he spotted Sancho dumpster diving in Chinatown...Sancho was terrified and wouldn't come anywhere near him...The next day (Sunday) this angel of a man went back to the same area to try again and Sancho was still there!!! Sancho finally went to him...he had been on the streets for 5 nights at this point...
This wonderful man took Sancho home to his apartment for some much needed food, water and TLC. Sancho slept in bed with him that night... The next day (monday) the man is determined to find one of our flyers downtown so he can call us and reunite us with our son...He couldnt find a flyer anywhere (the ones posted on city property had been taken down). He walked all over oakland trying to find a flyer...or someone who could recognize the doggie...no luck.
This man drove Sancho and his dog lucky to his vet...The vet suggested that he take Sancho to the SPCA...(now before I forget an important part of the story...this man had NO COMPUTER and didn't. have long distance capability on his phone)...So he takes them to the SPCA in Oakland, the one on hegenberger...When he got there they were closed. :(
A saint of a girl recognized sancho from his Pet Amber alert...unlocked the door to give the man (sanchos angel) sancho's flyer with our number...they also let him use their phone to call us since he didnt have long distance on his phone...
We got a call saying he had a dog that looked exactly like the picture...he even described his feet and grey lips!!!! He said they'd wait for us as long as it took outside in the grass...we arrived frantically 20 mins later and sure enough, THERE WAS SANCHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We spent 6 days without our son, and it was agonizing every second of everyday. I'm posting for those of you who've lost a pet. NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!!! We reached out to any and everyone who would listen, both in our community and online. This created a network of positivity that encouraged us to keep up the search! We are so grateful to be reunited as a family again. It never could have happened if we werent determined with our flyers, CL, FB and shelter searching. Hang in there. We are proof that you can bring your family member home safely.

As for Sancho...He is skinny, injured, scared and shook...but he's home with us. Now we can all start to heal together.

A million thank yous to everyone that helped, we couldn't have done it without you.

Search Details:
Sancho is a six year old, red, neutered, 15 lbs. Dachshund/Beagle mix. He is not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped.

Sancho took off from the business office during a robbery of the office. There was a sighting of Sancho about a half hour later a few blocks away. After that, no further sightings were called in.

We followed his track for several miles around Oakland when his people called the search off at the four hour minimum. They said they would continue to look for him.

I suggested continuing to look for Sancho in the city of Oakland, and to post flyers in as many places as possible.

"Key-in", DSH, Calico, Mill Valley

Key-in is a one year old, spayed, indoor/outdoor Calico DSH. He is not wearing a collar and is not microchipped.

There were no sightings of Key-in after she went missing.

We found a track leading away from the house, down the street and all the way to the Bay. We did find Key-in's track at a large storage yard where there were a lot of other cats and a lot of official feeding stations. Next door was a large office building, and we found more cats and more feeding bowls at that building.

Key-in's person said she would come back on Monday to see if anybody knew of seeing her cat in the area.

The search was called off after four hours because she had to get to work.

"Buck", Terrier mix, Tan with Black, Penngrove - Found!

Buck is a 20 pound, light brown with white, neutered terrier mix. He is not wearing his collar with ID tags, but he is microchipped.

Buck was running loose with his housemate, a Great Dane. The Great Dane came home after a few hours, but Buck did not come home.

The area is very rural and mountainous. Most of the house in the area have multiple acres, and their are several large cattle ranches.

There were no sightings of Buck after he went missing.

We found a track leading away from the house and up a steep road and around several other houses. The track went back to the area of the house and then veered off to the right along a steep trail. It eventually came out to other cattle ranches and onto paved roads. The track continued for several more miles.

The search was called off by Buck's people after several hours. They said they would keep looking for Buck.

Over two weeks later, I received a voicemail that Buck had been found. He had been picked up, and then the people went out of town for two weeks, taking Buck with them, and not trying to find his home. They happen to see Buck's flyer and called.

We found a track leading away from the house behind Lilac's house, which is the normal way she comes and goes, per her person. From there the track led away for several miles.

The search was called off by Lilac's person after four hours. She needed to get to work. She said she would keep looking for Lilac.

There were several sightings of Patches after he went missing, so we started at the latest sighting. We did pick up his track and followed it for several hours.

I had scheduled to come out the following morning, but I received a call late that night that Otis was found and came home.

"Sergeant Pepper", Norwegian Forest Cat, Orange, Oakland - Found!

Seargeant Pepper is an eight year old, orange and white Norwegian Forest Cat. He and his housemate and his person had just arrived to their new home from a plane ride. Pepper was let out of his crate and immediately run underneath an elevated floor, which was in a large warehouse.

I said I would come out and see if Pepper was still inside the warehouse or had left to the outside.

I was called about 24 hours later and told that Pepper was found still inside the warehouse.

"Frankie", Tabby, Orange, Oakland - Found!

Just wanted to let you know that Frankie came home this evening, a
little thin but not much the worse for wear. We had just spent the
afternoon posting new flyers all over our neighborhood and where we
left his trail, came home, and we started hearing meowing about an
hour after dark. Sure enough, it was him!

Frankie is a twelve year old, indoor only, orange tabby DSH. He is not wearing a collar and is not microchipped.

He got out by accident late one night when the front door did not close fully.

There were no sightings of Frankie after he went missing.

We found a track leading from the front door to behind the apartment building and then behind a neighboring apartment building and out to the street from there. The track continued from several miles all around Oakland. Frankie's people were going out of town the next day for a week.

About two weeks later I got an email from Frankie's person that Frankie was found back at his home. He appeared very thin, but did recognize them.

"Sam", Siamese, Seal Point, San Francisco - Found!

Update:
About one week after the search, I received an email that Sam had been found a few blocks from his home. I said that all of her walks around paid off and Sam made his way back home. She did not believe that Sam was ever missing from nearby his home, and felt that Dino was never tracking Sam's scent. I reminded her of all the sightings of Sam along the way, and the various spots. She felt it was another Siamese that people were seeing.

Sam is a 15 year old, indoor only, Seal Point Siamese. He is not wearing a collar and is not microchipped.

He got out by accident one night as one of the doors was left open. Both cats got out, and one was found nearby within the first 24 hours.

There were a couple of sightings of Sam within three days of being missing. On my way to the search, there was another sighting of Sam, so we started the search from there.

We found a track leading away. While on this search, three more people were positive they saw Sam along the track we were following.

"Tweetums", Siamese mix, Seal Point, Point Richmond - Found

Tweetums is a 14 year old, indoor/outdoor, microchipped, Seal Point Siamese.

He was seen by a neighbor being attacked by a loose dog, a husky wearing a pink collar, being walked by it's person in front of Tweetums home. While on my way to the house, I received a call that Tweetums was found deceased in a neighbor's yard.

"Cole", DSH, Black, Forest Knolls

Cole is a five year old, indoor/outdoor, all black DSH. He is not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped.

He was last seen in his house, but he did not come home later that day.

The area is a rural part of west Marin, so we had to check a pretty big area just to start the search. After doing that, we followed several tracks, but they all led back to his home. This told me that these were all past tracks of Cole, and there was not a recent track leading away from the home. This tells me that either Cole was picked up in a vehicle and carried away, unknowingly by the driver, or Cole was still on the large property and trapped somewhere. There were many buildings and containers in the area of his home, all possibilities of getting Cole trapped inside.

"Billy", German Shepherd/Rottweiler, Black and Tan, Sausalito

Billy is a black and tan, 100 pound, nine year old, neutered, microchipped Shepherd/Rottweiler/Doberman mix. He wearing a collar with ID tags.

There were no sightings of Billy after he went missing. He went missing from a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area near the YMCA, in the Marin Headlands, near the Point Bonita Lighthouse.

Billy was missing for a week before I was called because his people believed that he had fallen off a cliff since there were no sightings, and they said they scoured the area after he went missing.

We found a track leading away from the area where Billy was last seen and then it led out of the recreation area and into downtown Sausalito.

The search was called off after four hours by Billy's person. He said he would continue to look for Billy.

"Bruno and Otto", Maltese, White, Oakland - Found!

(I received this follow up letter from one of Bruno's and Otto's people.)

"I was fortunate enough to meet Jackie and Dino when our two dogs went missing from their home in the Oakland Hills, with no sign as to where they had gone or what had happened.

She and Dino ( her tracker ) followed our dogs scent along our street, through a park by our home, down a hiking path they had never been on and into a crowded shopping district where we got our first direct sightings of them.

At this point Jackie said their path altered and where before they had seemed to be just wandering aimlessly they were now being led. We continued to follow their trail down a busy city street until it got too dark and we had to call off our search.

The next morning as we continued to follow Dino's lead we got a call from someone who had seen one of our lost pet flyers and rescued our dogs from being sold on the sidewalk in front of a flea market. This flea market is located a short distance away from the same street we were tracking our dogs scent down.

Jackie and Dino did not lead us to our lost and shivering dogs like in the movies, but their guidance pointed us in the right direction and by defining our search area we were able to target the neighborhood where they were eventually found. With Jackie's help we focused our search and were able to put our flyers directly in front of the people most likely to have seen our lost guys and it worked!"

Bruno and Otto are two Maltese. Bruno is twelve and wearing a collar with an ID tag. Otto is eleven and wearing a collar with and ID tag. Neither dog is microchipped.

There were no sightings of either dog after they went missing from their backyard.

We found the track of the dogs leading away from the house and eventually into Joaquin Miller Park.

The search continued for four hours, when it was called off by Bruno and Otto's people since it was getting dark by that time. We agreed to meet the next morning to continue the search.

About an hour into the search, they get a call that Bruno and Otto were safe at a home in Pinole. They were told that the two dogs were being sold the previous day outside the Flea Market at the Oakland Coliseum. The woman who purchased them saw the flyer outside the flea market and called.

"Paw Paw", White with Orange Tabby Markings, DSH, Berkeley - Found!

Paw Paw is a male, indoor only, three month old, orange and white DSH. He is not wearing a collar and is not microchipped. He escaped out of one of the doors by accident.

There was a sighting of Paw Paw about four blocks from his home about three days after he went missing. We started there and did pick up Paw Paw's track.

After two and a half hours, Paw Paw's person called off the search saying she did not believe that Dino was following her cat's track.

Through another way, not by Paw Paw's person, I heard that Paw Paw was found several days after our search. He was found within a few blocks of his home.

The track led away from the sighting in various ways, and I told Paw Paw's person that it looked like her cat had been picked up and carried away. This would make sense for a friendly, three month old kitten. "Dixie", Black with White, DLH, San Rafael

Dixie is an adult indoor/outdoor, female, microchipped, black with white paws DLH. She is wearing a red collar with a bell, but no tags.

She did not come home one night even though she has a very regular schedule. Her home is behind a large open space, and her person believed she was taken by wildlife. Her person knew that she did not ever go to the front of the house, and existed back and forth through the back fence. It was never known the reason why Dixie would not go to the front of the house.

After checking the block surrounding the house, including the open space, we found the track leading away from the home, down the street.

Her person stopped the search after four hours. He said he would continue to look for Dixie.

My best guess is that Dixie was aware of a particular animal that was regularly in front of her home, and she was afraid of this animal. I think she was pretty good about keeping away from this animal for the last three years. Something unusual happened this one particular time and she came in contact with this animal by accident.

He was last seen by his person at midnight after he ran out of the front door. There were no additional sightings after that.

We found the track leading away from the home and down the street. The second track is because the first search was originally ended and then restarted by Yoshi's people at the same spot.

The search was ended after five hours by Yoshi's people, and they said they will keep looking for him.

"Roxie", Labrador/Chow mix, Black, Santa Cruz - Found!

This is the case that made me change to requiring a deposit for the full minimum before driving to the search.

I was making the drive to Santa Cruz after Roxie's person asked me to come down. While on the drive down, I called to say I was stuck in a very large traffic jam, and that I would be delayed. I spoke to the husband on the phone, and he informed me that Roxie had been found. I reminded him that I was still due the minimum plus mileage, and he said that he and his wife owed me nothing, since I never did any work. I reminded him that the minimum plus mileage was still due. He said he would have his wife call me when she returned home with Roxie.

The wife called me about a half hour later while I was still driving. I reminded her of the minimum plus mileage, and she offered to pay me only a little over a single hour's rate. She said that is what she felt the service was worth to her. I refused, and said I would be sending her an invoice for the full amount.

"Scruffy", Yorkshire Terrier, Black and Tan, Castro Valley

Scruffy is a 10 year old, neutered Yorkshire Terrier. He is wearing a collar with ID tags, but is not microchipped.

By accident, Scruffy was let into the part of the backyard that is not fenced. Normally he is allowed in the fenced only part of the yard.

There were some possible sightings of Scruffy after he went missing, but, with some great detective work on his family's part, they discovered that the dogs seen were other loose Yorkies and not Scruffy.

We found Scuffy's track leading down the driveway and then right onto Redwood Road. If he had made a left instead, he would have gone straight to downtown Castro Valley, and probably would have been found and picked up. However, going right instead, leads him into a very large open space area covered by public parks, private land and rural roads.

After traveling on Redwood Road, he made a turn onto a dirt hiking trail that would eventually, after several miles, lead into Lake Chabot Recreation Area. Once being in the park, he then made a loop around the main area and then out again to the other side of the lake, which leads to the dam and then eventually to Chabot Park in San Leandro.

There was a positive sighting of Scruffy in the parking lot of a Rite Aid store the night he went missing, which was along the track we followed him. An employee of Rite Aid saw him wandering around the lot that night as she got off of work.

After following his track for over six hours, his people called off the search, and said they would continue to look for Scruffy.

"Cloudy", Australian Shepherd, Red Merle, Los Altos - FOUND!

On Sunday, September 4, I received the following email from Cloudy's person:

First, thank you all for your words of encouragement, your help, your
suggestions and advice, your hopeful thoughts and prayers.

I'll start with Thursday morning when my daughter returned from Costa Rica.
It was Dawn's home that Cloudy went missing from 3 weeks and 1 day ago. We
spent the day posting notices in the stores of the village very near her
home (BOTH streets!). It was good to be with her but it didn't seem
particularly useful to me. Early Friday morning Dawn was at her computer
when she turned around and there at the glass door, was Cloudy! Dawn and
Cloudy looked at each other for a few beats while Dawn was thinking that she
must be hallucinating from lack of sleep. By the time Dawn got to the door
Cloudy had disappeared through the back non-fence to the neighbors. Frantic
activity followed, I drove up there & we searched & called with no results.
Joe came up & with Dawn we plastered the neighborhood with more signs.
Since Cloudy had made her way back into Dawn's backyard we called Animal
Services and had a large trap delivered. With stinky salmon kibble I baited
the trap, the path in the yard from her entrance area, the backfence
neighbor's yard from the hole in their fence to the street . . . I also
rubbed my hands on the wood in these areas to leave my scent. (Dino and his
mom taught me a lot!)

Friday afternoon I received a call from a man who had seen Cloudy go down a
long driveway a half mile from Dawn's. I was instantly in my car asking him
to JUST WATCH and if he sees her again, JUST FOLLOW & keep me posted. Still
on my way, I received a call from a lady who had also seen Cloudy in the
area & asked her to also just track. With the man, his two daughters, the
lady, Dawn & Ken, we figured out that Cloudy had disappeared down a
cul-de-sac which backed up to a deep drainage ditch (Adobe Creek). On the
other side of that was a very high fence then Foothill Expressway.

Later that night (still Friday) I got a call from a lady who had seen Cloudy
at Shoup Park a couple of miles from Dawn's home at 9:PM Thursday night. She
also mentioned that there's a lady who works at the community center there
who puts out cat food to feed the ferals, suggesting that Cloudy may be
dining on that. Interesting, but not yet useful.

Early Saturday morning Dawn called to say that we'd caught NOT Cloudy in the
trap. The first attached picture is a really cute but ticked off raccoon
that also likes salmon kibble. Animal Services guy came out to release the
critter and told me that it's the nature of the beasts that he wouldn't
return, that the odors he left would warn off other raccoons, and that a dog
would find the odors interesting and worth exploring. Huh. All good news.
Somewhere in there I remembered that Shoup Park had a creek running through
it. An aerial check on Google maps showed a crooked line of heavy foliage
running from where we last saw Cloudy on Friday afternoon, around & through
& eventually going through Shoup Park! Ah-Ha, so that's her highway and the
good news is that this creek (now dry) runs UNDER Foothill Expy so she
doesn't have to cross any busy streets. Smart girl!

Last night Joe and I went back to Los Altos to reset the trap and we left
the cover from her crate pad in it to lure her. This morning at about 8
Dawn called and in a very quiet voice told me to pick up my keys & purse, to
carefully drive to her house, TO PICK UP MY DAMN DOG!!!

We don't know when she got herself caught but she was certainly in the trap
when the sprinklers came on - she was soaked. And matted, stinky, dirty,
muddy, and did I mention stinky? Oh, and happy. Very happy. We parked my
car in their garage, the guys moved Cloudy & the trap into the garage. With
all the doors closed, we let her out. She wriggled & squirmed & flipped
over for a belly rub & climbed all over me. She's not skinny at all - about
the same as when she left. I've cut off most of the big mats. She's
actually in fine shape as far as I can tell. Not at all injured save for a
couple small cuts on her pads. Mats. She had these basketball size things
hanging under both ears. Her pretty, fluffy bum is now much less fluffy,
lopsided, and headed for the shower.

We'll visit the vet this week. I'm expecting some internal parasites &
realize that they may not have had time to show up yet.

And today is her 7th birthday - isn't that just the neatest thing?

"Cloudy's doing well. She had a bunch of thorns stuck into her sides but
with a sincere haircut I made sure all those were out. She had a yeast
infection in her ear & during the exam the vet found a thorn deep in her ear
canal. So glad that was removed before it caused serious damage. Other
than that she's truly a different dog. Happier, goofier, friendlier with
others . . . And let me tell you, she no longer lingers over her meals!"

Cloudy is a microchipped, spayed, red merle Australian Shepherd. She is wearing a collar with ID tags.

She was staying at a relatives house with her person while her person housesat. The rear fence had a hole that nobody knew about, but Cloudy found it in the middle of one night.

We tracked her for three separate days, and there were sightings of her in various locations along that track.

Search details:

Domino is a 10 month old, neutered, white with black DSH. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped.

He was last seen on the deck in the front of his home. There were no sightings of Domino since he went missing. His people were out of town at the time he went missing.

We found the track leading away from the home, through a local open space area, and down to the local elementary school. From there the track went to the high school and into town.

The search was stopped after several hours by Domino's person. They are continuing to look for him.

"Stella", English Setter, Black and White, Pescadero - FOUND!

Stella is a seven year old, spayed, black and white English Setter. She is wearing collar with ID tags, but she is not microchipped.

Stella was with a dog walker on a large private ranch when she got spooked by the movement of another dog jumping around. She was on leash at the time with the dog walker, but she escaped from the walker and ran off dragging her leash. The dog walker and her employer did a search of the area, but could not find her.

Stella's people were out of town at the time she was lost.

I received a call from Stella's people while they were on the East Coast, and I set a time for the next day to get down to Pescadero to look for Stella.

Prior to me leaving the next morning, I received a voicemail from the dog walker that Stella was found tangled with a tree with her leash.

"Maddie", Rat Terrier, Tri-Color, Belmont - FOUND!

A few hours after I completed the search, I received a phone call and voicemail message that Maddie had been picked up by an officer at Peninsula Humane Society, and they found her home through her microchip. The only information I have as to where she was found was "inside San Mateo, near the place where we stopped the search," per the voicemail.

Search Details:

Maddie is a spayed, three year old Tricolor Rat Terrier. She is not wearing her collar, but she is microchipped.

She got out of the house by accident when a construction worker left open the bedroom door where Maddie was staying, and the front door was also left open. There were numerous sightings of Maddie around the neighborhood, including by two Belmont PD officers who saw Maddie on near by CalTrain tracks. That is where we started the search.

The search continued for several hours and over nine miles all the way into San Mateo, near the Foster City border. The search was called off by Maddie's people. They said they would continue to look for her.

"Newman", Siamese, Lilac Point, Albany

Newman is an indoor only, two year old, neutered, microchipped lilac point Siamese. He is not wearing a collar.

On the way back from a vet appointment, Newman broke out of his carrier as he was being transported from the car back to home.

There were two sightings of Newman for the next 48 hours in the garden of the apartment complex where he lives, but he could not be caught.

I suggested setting a trap in the garden. By the time I arrived at the appointment early the next morning, Newman's person already had a trap rented. We set it up prior to the search.

First we checked the entire block surrounding his home, and only found one way out, and we followed that for a few blocks. Then we went back to complex and checked the last place that Newman was seen, which was just the previous early morning. We did find a track leading out of that yard, which was behind the complex where he lives. The track led around the block, into the complex and then back out, and then around the block and existed near the only place we found the only track leading out. We followed that for several blocks, and then we stopped at the request of Newman's person at the four hour minimum.

She said she would continue to look for Newman.

"Mr. Kitty", DSH, Grey Tabby, Pacifica - Found!

Mr. Kitty is an indoor only, three year old, neutered, grey tabby DSH. He is not wearing a collar, and he is not microchipped.

A window got left open by mistake, and Mr. Kitty could not be found anywhere in the house. I recommended looking both throughout the house and outside. We scheduled a time to do a search.

I got a call early the next morning that Mr. Kitty had returned!

"Pepper", Australian Cattle Dog mix, Black, Pacifica - Found

Pepper is a neutered, two year old, black, Australian Cattle Dog mix. He is wearing an orange collar with no tags, but he is microchipped.

There were sightings of Pepper back in Pacific and on Skyline Drive, near where he was lost, but there had not been sightings for a couple of days. We decided to start the search from there.

On my way to meet Pepper's person, I passed what appeared to be a medium size black body on one of the freeway ramps from Northbound 280 to Southbound 1. I was unclear exactly what I saw, and due to the location, I was unable to stop or turn around. I continued on my way to meet Pepper's person, and I told her about the sighting when I arrived.

We made our way back to the ramp, and she confirmed by Pepper's collar that the body was Pepper. She had a small car, so we were able to pull aside into a small area and park. I went back to the spot and pulled the body off to the side as I dodged traffic coming around the ramp.

Pepper's person could not back up to the body, so she drove around again and came up to the ramp and pulled off sooner to where I had the body. We quickly put the body into the back of her small station wagon and drove off, back to Pacifica to where my van was parked.

Due to the condition of body, it appeared Pepper had only been deceased for a few hours.

"Casey", Boxer, Fawn, San Bruno - FOUND!

On August 3, 2011, I received the following text message from Casey's person:

"Wonderful news! We found Casey this morning in South San Francisco thanks to calls from folks who saw the posters. It was Georgia's scent that she came to immediately and mama Lisa's voice. Thanks for all your help!"

Search details:

Casey is a seven year old, female fawn boxer with natural ears and natural tail. She is not wearing a collar, but she is microchipped. Casey is very shy of people, and escaped from her yard when the regular gardener left the side gate open when he went back to his vehicle.

There were no confirmed sightings of Casey, so we started from her home. For the next two days we followed the track through San Bruno, South San Francisco, Daly City, Pacifica and San Francisco. The search was stopped in San Francisco late one afternoon as we ran out of daylight in the Mission District. We were so do another search when Casey was found that day!

"Pumpkin", White with Orange Patches, DSH, Fairfax

Pumpkin is a indoor/outdoor, female, adult orange and white DSH. She is wearing a purple collar with a bell and ID tags, and she is microchipped.

There was a sighting of Pumpkin a couple of days after she was last seen by her person. A neighbor across the street saw Pumpkin in his yard.

We started the search there and found her track leading quickly away from the unfenced and hillside yard. It did appear she was chased from that yard because the track when into some very steep and wooded hills and canyons. It then went down a hillside and then out onto paved roads.

We continued the search for several hours when her person stopped the search and said she would keep looking for Pumpkin.

Myla is a one year old, female, spayed, fawn Pug. She is not wearing a collar and is not microchipped. She was recently adopted from a shelter by Pug rescue and was staying at a foster home when she got out of a yard with a gate left open by accident.

There were a couple of sightings of Myla for a couple of days after she went missing. We started the search from the last location. We followed the track for four hours when the foster coordinator, who was walking with us, called off the search. She said the group would continue to look for Myla.

Allure is a 70 pound, spayed Greyhound who is white with black patches. She is wearing a collar with ID tags and is microchipped. She was last seen in her backyard in the middle of the night. She and the other Greyhound broke through the fence into a neighbor's yard and then got through a broken board in that neighbor's yard. The second dog returned home the next morning. There were no sightings of Allure after she went missing.

"Bear", English Bulldog, Red Brindle, Pacifica - Found

Bear is a one year old, dark brindle English Bulldog.

I got a call from his people while they were out of the country. Both English Bulldogs were in the yard, but Bear was missing. It was automatically assumed that Bear was stolen out of the yard, and the search went far and wide looking from him, while they were still on vacation. There were no sightings or calls.

After his people returned home from vacation about two weeks later, Bear was found deceased in the cover and gated pool in the backyard. I was told that the caretaker looked in the pool and they looked in the pool when they returned, but he was not found for about 48 hours later when they uncovered the pool to take a swim.

"Kishmish", Yorkshire Terrier, Silver and tan, Pescadero

Kishmish is a three year old, neutered, silver and tan Yorkshire Terrier. He is wearing a collar with ID tags and is microchipped.

Kishmish was walking with a dog walker south of Pescadero when he got spooked by a noise and took off. He was not on leash. He was spotted by a man and his daughter on Highway one a couple of days after he went missing. They were driving in a car, and they said he appeared to be lost, as he ran up and down the highway, south of the turn off to Pescadero. They did not stop to help him because, as the man said, "He is not the kind of person to stops to pick up a dog on the road."

We started the search from there and followed the track for over 10 miles from the coast and into the hills. The search was stopped as we ran out of daylight.

There are three maps because the GPS was having a hard time.

"Paco", Chihuahua/Pug mix, Black, Oakland - Found!

Paco is an all black, one year old, Chihuahua/Pug mix. He has a curly tail and bug eyes. He is not wearing a collar and is not microchipped.

I received a call that Paco was missing from his home. He was last seen by his person as she left for work that morning. Paco and the other dogs do not have access to the yard, but instead use pads until somebody comes home at lunch to take them out. The house has a burglar alarm, and the alarm had not been set off. She could not figure out how he got out of the house. There were no sightings of Paco outside the house.

In the house there is an attic with access from the main house with a set of stairs from the back of the house. Paco has been up in the attic in the past. She said she checked the entire house and the attic but did not find Paco.

I recommended that they go through the house again, and this time act like they had never gone through the house before. Act like this would be the first time. This would get them away from thinking, "Oh, we have already checked there."

I got a call early the next morning that she and her boyfriend went through the house and attic again, and found Paco stuck in a hole in the floor of the attic. He had been missing for over 48 hours. He never made any sounds as they went through looking for him.

"Cowboy", Tuxedo, DSH cat, Novato

Cowboy is a one year old, tuxedo DSH cat. He is wearing a collar with an ID tag and he is microchipped. He was staying at the home of his person's mother while his person was out of town. He was last seen at about 6 AM when he was seen out on the back patio. There is a cat door, and he has free access to come and go.

The track we found led away from the condo and across the street, straight up a canyon and then back down. After about an hour the search was stopped by Cowboy's person. She did not believe that Cowboy would travel that far, and she said that Dino was not tracking since she believed that a dog should only track with their nose to the ground.

"Sweetie", Black and Tan, German Shepherd mix, Vallejo - Found!

I received a voicemail two days after our search that Sweetie appeared back home after being missing for a week.

Sweetie is a female, spayed, 10 year old, black and tan, German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix. She is wearing a collar with current ID tags and is microchipped.

On the 4th of July, Sweetie was in her backyard, when she got scared by fireworks and jumped the fence. There were a couple of possible sightings of Sweetie, but they could not be confirmed.

We followed Sweetie's track for over 13 miles, and into the Napa County line. We had to stop as we ran out of daylight.

There were two Vallejo Times articles about Sweetie, before and after she went missing and was found, and dogs missing from fireworks. However, the links are no longer active, and I can not display them here without being charged $5.00 per article.

"Buckwheat", Black and Tan, German Shepherd/Kelpie mix, El Sobrante - Found!

See the Craigslist ad at the end of this blog posted by Buckwheat's people after he was found.

Our search was on July 7, 2011.

Buckwheat went missing the night of the 4th of July from his yard. He was put out into his yard at night, but apparently, got scared by the fireworks going off.

Buckwheat is a 50 pound, black and tan, neutered, Border Collie/German Shepherd mix. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped. There were no sightings of Buckwheat after he went missing.

We found his track leading away from the house and around the corner and then all the way into Pinole. He went down to the water and around some houses. We stopped the search in Pinole just as we were running out of daylight.

I received a phone call about two days later that Buckwheat was turned into the night box of the Pinole shelter and was identified by his microchip.

My dog Buckwheat is found! Thanks to all of you who expressed concern (hercules, pinole, san pablo, el sob)

On Monday night my dog Buckwheat was spooked by the firecrackers and ran away. He just walked out the doggie door, which he does freely, but that night he did not come back- he was so frantic that he broke out of a gate that we thought was impenetrable. He started a journey that lasted until Thursday night when some good Samaritan took him to the Pinole Shelter. There is a night box there - must have been a freaky experience for him but he was really happy when he was traced back to us from the chip in his neck.

I learned some valuable lessons from this experience. First of all watch your dogs and cats like hawks on July 4 and New Years - the fireworks really scare them and make them do irrational things. Second, the shelters are the best place to take found animals - I frantically visited the shelters every day, and every time I was there someone was being reunited with their dogs. If you keep the dog in your home in hopes of finding the owner there is a good chance you are just prolonging the anxiety. Third - getting the word out is key - flyers, flyers, flyers, as well as just telling everyone you know.

Last I want to give a plug to Jackie Phillips of the Social Pet. She and her dog Dino were able to help track Buckwheat 's journey from just catching the scent of his bed. Bebe is a seven year old, neutered, orange Persian cat. He is predominately indoors only, but will spend small amounts of time on his front door porch. He has no collar and is not microchipped.

He was last seen at about 6 AM on his front porch as his person left to go to work and put him outside. Usually another family member will let Bebe into the house, but he was missing when somebody went out front to let him in.

It appeared that Bebe was chased from the house and down the street and into a large, private ranch. His person stopped the search after five hours.

"Jamaya", Black and Tan, German Shepherd/Saluki mix, Lafayette

Jamaya is a seven year old black and tan, Saluki/German Shepherd mix. She is wearing a collar with ID tags and she is microchipped.

Jamaya got loose from her yard in the middle of the night, and did not return home. There were no sightings of her, and I was called out approximately one week after her being missing.

The track led around her yard, into the next door neighbor's yard and then through another neighbor's yard and out onto a main road, where the track led away from the house.

The search was stopped by Jamaya's person at the four hour minimum mark. She continues to look for Jamaya.

"Tyson", Boxer, Brindle, Oakley - Found!

After missing for almost one week, Tyson, a 13 year old Boxer, was found several blocks from his home!

Tyson is a 13 year old, dark brindle, neutered male Boxer. He is wearing a collar with a tag, but is not microchipped.

He went missing from his home after his person left him in the backyard overnight on a Thursday to attend to work out of the area. A neighbor found Tyson loose on the street around 10 PM, and put him back into the yard, not knowing that the gate latch was not secure. Sometime during the night, Tyson got out again. There were no sightings of Tyson until I arrived the following Wednesday.

We immediately found the track leading away from the side gate where he got out from. The track went around the neighborhood and then straight out toward a regional biking and hiking trail along a local waterway. Just as we made a right turn back onto a main street, an animal control truck passed us. The officer made a turn around, and we flagged him down, telling him who we were looking for. He asked if we were looking for an elderly Boxer, and we said, "Yes!" He said that he was trying to catch an elderly Boxer at this moment, and the dog was just down the street.

We turned to the left and ran down the street in the direction the truck was headed. We could see far in the distance (Oakley is a very flat location, so seeing far is easy) a brown dog running around the road. I ran as fast as I could, and Tyson's person got into a car with a passerby and drove down the road. After several minutes, Tyson ran down the road toward us, Tyson's person got out of the car and bent down to show himself to Tyson, and Tyson ran right past him. He did not recognize his own person. This continued up and down the street a couple of times. He finally ran past me with Dino and I tried to block him, but he ran past me. I did reach out to get a hold of his collar, and almost had him, but lost my grip as he ran full speed past me.

Tyson was running full speed down the road in the direction that we just tracked him from. He got back onto the canal walkway, and the animal control officer went around and blocked the other side. We followed him down the path, calling his name over and over. I could see bloody paw prints where he was running, so it was obvious his paws were all torn up.

After several minutes, Tyson got down to where the officer was, and turned around to find his person behind him. Tyson then turned around and went toward the officer again, and turned around toward his person, and kept going. His person was able to tackle Tyson as he tried to run past him. I got up next to Tyson, and gave them my leash.

I could see that Tyson's feel were all bloody and torn up. It was obvious that Tyson was having a hard time standing. The animal control officer gave Tyson a ride back to his home and we met him there. Tyson's person got into his truck and followed the officer, who drove Tyson to their own vet to have Tyson immediately checked.

Tyson's response to his person while lost is actually very common since the dog became so disoriented and lost. The animal control officer said he first saw Tyson running down the middle of a major highway near where we first met up with him. Tyson was very disoriented and confused, running in and out of traffic, completely oblivious to his surroundings.

It took the coordination and dedication of three people and a tracking dog to get Tyson back home. I would like to thank the Animal Control Officer with Contra Costa County who was persistent in getting Tyson back home. I think his last name was Morales, when I glanced at his nametag. He told me he was following Tyson for 20 minutes when he saw us. He saw the bloody feet and that Tyson was elderly and running in traffic, obviously disoriented. He said he was trying to get Tyson cornered into a yard, and then he went out of his way to drive Tyson all the way to his private vet where Tyson was already comfortable. Good job, everyone!

"Hugo", Great Dane/Rottweiler Mix, Black & Tan, San Jose - Found!

Hugo Found!

(15 minutes into search!)

Super Good News! Hugo was found today alive and well and very happy!

Hugo is a 4 year old, neutered, black and tan, Rottweiler and Great Dane mix, weighing in at 110 pounds. He is microchipped and wearing a collar with only a microchip ID tag. He was staying at the home of some family members while his people were out of town on vacation. He jumped part of the fence and took off on a Thursday afternoon. There were no sightings of Hugo. His people got back into town the following Saturday night. I was emailed late Sunday evening, we talked Monday morning, and I went out onto the search early Monday afternoon.

I arrived to do a search with my tracking dog, Dino, at the house of where Hugo was last seen in San Jose, the house he was staying at while his people were on vacation. Upon arriving, I was told that they had just received a call that Hugo was seen both on the past Friday and just last night (Sunday) in the area of Lee Matheson school in San Jose. Apparently, there is some kind of field on the school grounds where he was seen, and that we should go there.

When we got to the school, we found that the field was massive, yet all fenced in. Hugo's person called the person who said they saw Hugo, to get a more accurate location on the field. Instead of the school, we were told by the young man on the phone, Hugo was actually seen at the MACSA (Mexican American Community Services Agency) adjacent to the school. The person we spoke to on the phone was a 15 year old boy, and we found out that it was his younger sister who said she saw Hugo, but we still did not a have a specific location at MACSA where Hugo was sighted.

We went out of the school, and around the corner to the MACSA center, and this time I spoke to the boy personally to get more accurate information. He told me that it wasn't his sister who saw Hugo, but his sister's friend, and that his sister needed to call her friend to get a more accurate location on the center grounds where Hugo was seen. The boy, Jesus, said that he would call the friend and call us back.

In the meantime, we got permission from the front office to be on their property, and we started to look around. The center was huge, and it included a large parking lot, a large playground, a small field next to the playground and lots of trees and bushes. Finally, the phone rang, and Jesus told me the exact location on the center grounds. which was the field next to the playground where Hugo was seen. Apparently, the girl was feeding and petting Hugo near the playground both Sunday and Friday evenings. Adults were there, but nobody attempted to catch Hugo and read his tags. They just let him go, and he walked away. Monday morning, the father, who does not speak English, saw Hugo's flyer near his work, which was several miles from the MACSA center, and closer to the house where Hugo escaped. Since he did not speak English, the conversation was pretty minimal. However, Hugo's people knew somebody who spoke fluent Spanish and that person called back and got more accurate information.

While I showed Dino the area for him to get a current track and Hugo's direction of travel, the husband started to look all around the center, including all the bushes and trees. As he was whistling and calling Hugo's name, he thought he saw something move inside some of the bushes. When he looked further, he saw Hugo buried deep inside the bushes. He started to call him and coax him out, and finally Hugo came to him! He ran over to the other side where I was with his wife and Dino, and he had Hugo with him all happy and wiggly, even for a 110lb dog.

The last time Hugo was seen was approximately 8:30 PM last night by the children at the MACSA center. We don't know if he was out running around and then came back to the center, or was he at the center the whole time. The temperatures were pretty high today, around 80 degrees, so he could have just been hiding away from the heat. And since the sighting of Hugo did not come in until just this morning, there were no flyers in the area for Hugo being missing. It was pure luck that the father saw the flyer at his work, several miles away from where Hugo was seen. Then, it was fortunate that he actually called, even though he knew his English was not perfect. He could have ignored it and said it was somebody else's problem. Then we had more luck that we were able to reach the kids while we were on the search to get a more accurate location. Then, there was even more luck, that Hugo was at the center when we were there, and that he did not bolt when he was discovered. That exact thing occurred with another search I had over the weekend when the dog was spotted by his people because he was so scared and disoriented.

It takes a small village (and some luck) to bring a pet safely home. The flyers needed to be put up, people need to respond to the flyers and the response to sightings has to be immediate.

"Paco", Chihuahua, Dark Brown, Hollister - Found!

Paco was found safe and healthy after missing for several days!!!!!!!

Paco is a 4 pound, unneutered, dark brown Chihuahua with long legs and ears that stand up. He went missing from his home in Hollister after he crawled under a fence in his backyard. He was wearing a collar with an ID tag on him, but he is not microchipped. After a couple of days of searching for Paco, I was asked to come and help look this past Saturday. I brought Dino, my tracking dog, and we started from a possible sighting of Paco from the day before.

As we were following the track through the streets of Hollister, and talking to everybody along the way, we came across a gentleman who was certain he saw Paco just that morning in another part of town, near the DMV office. We went to that location and we did pick up Paco's scent in that area and followed it for several blocks and then it went out into some very large agricultural fields. We continued to follow Paco for several more hours throughout Hollister, and we decided to stop the search late in the day after all three of us were exhausted.

I recommended to keeping putting up posters and flyers throughout the town and following up on all leads. It was clear that Paco was moving around town and throughout the fields.

I received a call the next day that Paco had been found! It took many people to eventually catch him. A woman had spotted him a couple of times in town, and then saw the flyer at a local store and called immediately. Paco's people went to where he was being spotted, which was the first set of large agricultural fields we tracked him to earlier the day before. He had returned to a known location. My guess is that he was traveling all over Hollister and the surrounding fields since he was lost.

According to Paco's person, the entire family and extended family worked for a couple of hours in these fields to finally catch Paco. He was so scared and disoriented that he did not even recognize familiar voices and ran as fast as possible in the opposite direction. It finally took a male family member to leap several feet and tackle Paco! Now that is dedication!

The next day, Monday, was Paco's person's birthday, so she said that having Paco back was the absolute best present she could ever have!

"Dillon and Madden", Brittany Spaniels, Fairfield - 1 Found!

"Jackie and Dino really went the extra mile (literally) in trying to help us find our Dillon. His track went cold is in the same area where we got a report of someone seeing a dog like ours being put in a truck. Although we still haven't located him, I would use use Jackie and Dino's services again if I am ever in the unfortunate position to be looking for a lost dog. They gave it their best shot, even in some grueling heat. Dino is a trooper and even when called off, he was still ready to go more. Dillon is a seven year old, orange and white, neutered Brittany Spaniel. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped.

Both dogs had been missing for one week when I was called.

Both dogs got out the front door as it was left open by accident by a family member. Both dogs were spotted in various areas within several blocks of the house. There was a possible sighting of one of the dogs at a Target shopping center by a homeless person hanging out. I decided to go to that spot and check the scent. I gave both scents to Dino and he did find out of the scents leading away. By the description of the dog, it appeared that the dog was Dillon, the older dog. That is the first track below.

The next day, a person called to say that she thought her father had one of the dogs. Madden's person went to the home, and it was Madden, the younger dog. The finder had picked up Madden the following Saturday, the day after he escaped, from a neighborhood several blocks from Madden's home. The finder confirmed that there was only one dog that he picked up and never saw another dog. The finder did not speak English and lived alone down a long gravel road. He didn't know about a microchip and never checked for flyers in the area. Since Madden did not have a collar on, he did not know who to call.

We ended day one at a large vineyard, but nobody was home to give us permission to enter. They left a note on the door asking for a call back. They received one late Sunday night, after Madden had been found. We went back to that property the next afternoon. Temps were hovering in the high 90's.

We went through the vineyard and back out onto another property and up into a private and gate community called Rancho Solano. This place is not what comes to mind when the name Fairfield is mentioned. These are very large and custom home nestled among a gold course and rolling hills.

We followed the track until almost dark at 9 PM. At that time Dillon's person said that another woman approached her and said that a dog matching Dillon's description was picked up by an animal control truck earlier that day down by the main guard shack. We checked Petharbor for that day, which was a closed day, but nothing was listed.

They went to the shelter in the morning, and they reported that no Brittany Spaniel had been picked up by any of their trucks that day. There is only one animal control agency for the entire county of Solano.

We figured what the woman saw was instead of white work truck with boxes on the back, which can look very similar, plus they have emblems on the doors and many of the guys wear some type of uniform, making them look a lot like A/C. Dillon's person said they would put out notices and alter the Craigslist ad with that information, and keep looking for Dillon.

"Kylie", Australian Cattle Dog, Grey/White, San Francisco

As of July 1, Kylie is still missing and being spotted around San Francisco.

Kylie is a one year old, spayed, Australian Cattle Dog. She is wearing a collar with ID tags and is microchipped. She was staying at a friend's house for a couple of hours when she escaped through the front door.

There were multiple sightings of Kylie around the area where she escaped and then she was sighted at a spot near Golden Gate Park. This is where we started our search.

About five hours into the search, Kylie's person received a phone call that Kylie was spotted at Harding Park/Lake Merced, near the bathrooms. We were only a very short distance from that, and we got into the car and drove there. We did pick up Kylie's scent and followed it around the park/lake and then it went back into the park/lake area.

Later that night at both 10:30 PM and later at 1 AM, Kylie was spotted at Diamond Heights and Duncan. Her person went there, and did see Kylie running down the street. She called to Kylie, but the dog kept running, apparently not recognized the voice.

"Tortilla", DSH, Brown Tabby, San Francisco - Found!

Two days after the search, I received the follow email:

Hi Jackie

Breaking news : tortilla was found in a garden on the street above us today - alive!

My note: Tortilla's person doubted that her cat could have traveled the distance that we tracked her, but it, actually, would be very doable. There were no sightings and she said she did cover the area with flyers. Cats can travel extensively and hid when necessary.

Tortilla is a 16 year old, indoor only, DSH brown tabby. She does not have a collar on and is not microchipped. The front door got left open by mistake, and she was not noticed missing until later that night when they came back from work.

She was missing for about five days when I was called. There were no sightings of Tortilla after she went missing.

"Travis", Siamese, Lilac Point, Martinez - Found

End of case:
On July 8, 2011, I received an email that Travis' body was found underneath a next door neighbor's house. The body was found on June 8, by accident, by a person doing a home inspection on the house, which is for sale. This was nine days after our search and 15 days after he disappeared. The body was still bloated, which means that Travis had only been deceased for 24 to 48 hours at the most. There were no additional sightings of Travis after we did the search. The exact cause of death remains unknown. The body was buried immediately after it was discovered.

Travis' person remains unconvinced that Travis could have traveled so far from his home. She believes that Travis was in his neighborhood the entire time, perhaps under this house since he disappeared.

Travis is a three year old, male, lilac point Siamese. He is not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped. He was last seen around 4 AM eating food in the kitchen. There were no sightings of Travis after he was last seen at home.

Pinkerton is a ten year old, blond, Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix. Her hearing and eyesight per poor. Her people live on a very large property of almost 20 acres. Initially, before I arrived, they assumed Pinkerton had been attacked and taken away by a predator, so they did not expand their search beyond their own property.

When I arrived, Dino did find Pinkerton's track going down their long driveway and across the road to a neighbor's property. At this property, the owner did say that Pinkerton's housemate was a regular visitor, but they never saw Pinkerton there.

Tiger is a very friendly, 10 year old, indoor/outdoor, silver and grey tabby. He is not wearing a collar and he does not have a microchip. He did not come home one day after a very predictable schedule.

His person lives in a gated community attached to a golf course. At the end of their street is a dead end that opens up into a golf course which runs along the ocean coast.

There was a single sighting of Tiger later in the day when his person last saw him. A neighbor saw him running along the golf course, and he said he had seen Tiger in that area before, so it did not alarm him and he did not know Tiger was missing until his person was out looking for him.

About two weeks after the search, I received the following email:

"Good news,

We got a call from around the corner past the park on reuby and he found him. Lost a lot of weight, I ll take him to vet tomorrow. Thanks for all your help and information."

This location was along the path we tracked him on the way back.

Korin is a very friendly, very large (over 18 pounds), indoor only, eight year old, orange tabby. He is not microchipped, but is wearing a collar with tags.

Korin escaped as the family was leaving early in the morning for a vacation, and he was not noticed missing until a relative caring for Korin and the other cat came by the next day. When they got back from vacation at the end of the week, a full search for Korin began even though the relative did contact the local shelter and start to put up flyers. There were no sightings called in.

"Bella", Calico, Manx, South San Francisco

Bella is an indoor only, two year old, spayed and microchipped Calico Manx with a stubby tail. She was last seen around midnight at home.

No sightings had been called in of Bella.

When we got to the top of Greenpark Terrace, we found a large water holding tank. After checking multiple times and different areas, Dino indicated that there was no track leading out of the tank area or the fenced in area. We were able to find a contact for the company managing the tank, and they were able to send out a person to let us into the fenced in area. We did find Bella's track leading into the fenced in area and around and up on to the tiered landscaping, but then the track stopped just at the gate. The employee did confirm that another employee was there the past Friday, two days after Bella went missing, to do regular maintenance on the tank. He said that he would talk to that employee to confirm if they saw a cat in the area, or maybe one who could have jumped into their truck. Bella could have jumped out of the truck anywhere along the way.

Four days after the search, Bella's person received a call that a cat of Bella's description was seen hanging out at a feeding station in the general area of her home, which is a very large marina with large parks along the bay. The employee of the company managing the water tank never called her back. I suggested putting out traps at the feeding station to attempt to catch her.

Bella could have jumped out of the work truck anywhere along the way, and made it back to the general area of the marina.

There was a problem with the GPS that day, and the tracking did not kick in until up along Sister Cities Blvd, but Bella was lost back at the marina on the other side of the freeway along Oyster Point Blvd and Oyster Point Park.

He was staying with the daughter of his person while his person was vacationing out of the country. Beau Beau escaped by accident when a door got left open by mistake. They have not received any calls for any sightings.

We had a searched scheduled for two days after the call since I was going to be out of town for the next day. I called the following day to check in and confirm the appointment for the next day, but I was told that they wanted to cancel the search since they had adopted a new kitten at the shelter just that day while they were in there looking for Beau Beau.

They promised they would continue to look for Beau Beau. However, I have found that when people adopt a new animal after loosing a pet, they do not continue the search in a whole hearted attempt. They purchase the new animal to compensate for the emotions they are experiencing on the loss of the first animal. I hope I am wrong.

"Cherry", Red, Pit Bull, San Francisco - Found!

Cherry is a spayed, six year old, red, female pit bull who is microchipped, but is not wearing a collar or tags. Cherry was known to be very friendly with everybody she met.

There were no sightings of Cherry after she went missing.

Her person had distributed a lot of flyers the night before in areas he had not placed them before. On the flyer it said they were offering a $500 reward.

We had a searched scheduled for early in the morning. I got to the home and they said they had received a call from a person who said they had Cherry and was going to bring her by. He knew that this person, who ended up being a high school student, was responding to the reward.

The finder said that he and his sister were walking home from school, which was on the way past Cherry's house. He said that Cherry approached them as they walked by and followed them home. The finder said he had intended to keep Cherry, since she was such a nice dog, and she got along with his other dog. They had Cherry for almost a week when they saw the flyer with the reward.

"Lucy", Black and Silver, Miniature Schnauzer, Healdsburg

Lucy was last seen at the bottom of her driveway on her property. Another person later told Lucy's people that they saw Lucy being picked up on this same driveway by a man in a full size Chevy van. No further sighting were called in.

I did not do a search, but I did a lengthy phone consultation with Lucy's person where the best place to look for Lucy.

"Franco", Chihuahua, Black, Emeryville

Franco ran off from a courtyard inside a gated apartment building while his person reached into the mailbox to pull out his mail. Franco jumped from his arms and ran out a wrought iron gate. There were no sightings so we started the search from the external gate.

As of June 21, 2011, I have not heard Franco was found.

"Tiki", Chihuahua, Light Brown/Grey, San Jose - Found!

Tiki is a five pound, three year old, unspayed, light brown Chihuahua who is not wearing a collar or microchipped.

Tiki got out of the house by accident when the front door got left open for a few minutes. She was spotted later that same day running in the neighborhood, but nobody could catch her.

We searched for four hours when the search was called off by Tiki's person.

She was found several days later in the general area of where we searched when she was found in the yard of a house. The finder checked CraigsList and found the ad posted by Tiki's person and called them.

"Maya", Chihuahua/Terrier/Dachshund mix, Dublin - Found!

Weather was rain and cold all day, and was the same for several days prior to the search.

Maya is an approximately two year old spayed, Chihuahua/Doxie/Terrier mix. Her family had recently adopted her from a local shelter, after Maya spent four months at the shelter following her rescue from a large hoarding case. Her person is a volunteer at the shelter and was able to get to know Maya prior to her official adoption.

A month after her adoption one of her new family members decided to take Maya out for walk. She was wearing her collar with full ID tags, and she is microchipped. Unfortunately, the leash was not completely fastened to the collar and Maya broke away and took off.

She was not seen for over two days when she reappeared back at the shelter where she was adopted from. However, she would not approach anybody, and ran away when a volunteer recognized her and tried to catch her.

We met the next day at the shelter, and when I arrived I was told that Maya had been spotted just the prior evening at a fire station a block away. The fire fighters had known about her missing and put out a bowl of food. She arrived there later that evening. They called Maya's people at home, and left a message. Unfortunately, nobody was home and the home phone did not forward to the cell phone, which had an out of the area area code.

I suggested we go to the fire station and ask if they would be willing to have a trap set on their property, and they agreed. Plus, Maya's people lived very close by, and they would be able to come by to maintain it and observe it.

We started the search behind the fire station, and found the track leading away from the station and up into the fenced facility of Santa Rita Jail. The whole area of the shelter and fire station is all property of Alameda County, and includes the county jail, Santa Rita, and a Federal Prison, which even Maya's person did not know existed, and she lives within two miles of the area.

We were allowed permission into Santa Rita jail, and the track led onto the shooting range. We did get permission to enter that facility, even though there was practice occurring. At one point, we did get behind the shooting, but we decided to sit back and wait, as per instructed by the Range Master.

The track came back out of the shooting range and came out of the jail and then made a right down the main road. This led us directly onto the property of a federal prison. We were not allowed to follow the track throughout the prison, but, strangely we were allowed to follow the road through the prison all the way to the back where there was staff housing. We passed out flyers there, but nobody was out since it was pouring rain.

We walked back to the cars, and by this time Maya's person had arranged to have her husband pick up a large trap and bring it to the fire station, along with same cans of food. We found a nice secluded place to put the trap in the yard of the station back near the dumpster.

I received a call the next day in the afternoon that Maya had been caught in the trap! Maya had been spotted for the past 24 hours in a couple of spots close by near the jail and the shelter and the fire station. They moved the trap to one of those locations, and got a couple of more traps and was in the process of setting them, when they checked the first one and found Maya inside.

I was told she was very hunger and appeared disoriented. They brought the trap into the shelter and released her from inside one of the rooms.

"Sighted all along Iron Horse Trail in Alamo and Danville.
Last seen on July 9th in Alamo Plaza and July 12th on Sycamore Valley Road in Danville."

On Friday, April 29, Coby was spotted on Camille in Alamo, near the Iron Horse Trail, which is near where we left off on Day 6.

On Tuesday, April 19, Coby was spotted in Alamo, on Danville Blvd near Hillgrade Road, in front of The New Life Church. Just behind the church is the IronHorse Trail, which is a connection to the Lafayette/Moraga Trail near Coby's house. He was described as thin and dirty. We went to that spot and confirmed that Coby's scent was there, and it was also out on the Trail behind the church.

Coby is an eight month old, black with tan, neutered, German Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix. He is wearing a collar with full ID tags and he is microchipped. He was missing from his home for a week when I was called. The home is on several wooded acres, and the family believed he was deceased somewhere on the property.

When I got to the property, we found Coby's track leading away from the house and up a hillside and out onto another street.

Day Five, Track One:

On this day, we received a sighting of Coby two days prior up on St. Mary's in front of the roller rink. We drove there and his scent was there. We followed it along the Lafayette/Moraga Regional Trail until it got too dark. The search was stopped by Coby's family. They said they would continue looking for him.

Within the next two days, a couple of sightings of Coby's were confirmed, but he was not caught.

"Polly", Irish Setter, San Francisco - Found

Polly was a three year old Irish Setter. She was staying with her dog sitter while her people went out of town for the weekend. She was wearing her collar with ID tags and was microchipped.

The neighbor of her dog sitter came into the house on a Friday evening where Polly was staying with the approval of the dog sitter because the neighbor was locked out of their house. This startled Polly and she ran out. Polly's housemate, another Irish Setter, did not take off and remained at the dog sitter.

I was called the next morning, Saturday, as I was driving up to Roseville for the search for Guiseppe. I said that I had plans for the next day, Sunday, that I could not change. I gave the dog sitter a lot of different things to do to look for her.

I followed up the next afternoon, and I was told that Polly had been found deceased, hit by a car, by animal control Saturday afternoon.

"Guiseppe", Burmese, Roseville, CA - Found!

Guiseppe is a 10 month old, nine pound Burmese. He is wearing a green collar with black ID tag and he is microchipped.

He was last seen in his yard at approximately 3 PM with a 15 foot white cord attached to his collar, while his person was working nearby. She had to answer a phone call inside. When she came back out, Guiseppe was missing. There were no sightings or phone calls. He was missing for one week when I was called.

We found a track leading away from the area and then through a large open field and back out again. From there the track went around into some neighborhoods and back out onto Baseline. We followed that track into another neighborhood.

Several hours later, Guiseppe's person received a call from her husband, who was at home, that Guiseppe was found in the yard of a neighbor. It is unknown how long he had been back in that area, but it was less than one mile from where we were when we got the call.

Since Guiseppe had been missing for one week, the whole neighborhood was aware that Guiseppe was missing, and we did not have a timeframe on the track we were following, it is unknown how long Guiseppe had been in the area.

"Dante", Abyssianian, Santa Rosa, CA - Found!

Dante is a 10 year old, neutered Abyssianian. He is wearing a collar with tags, but he is not microchipped. His person had recently moved to the new home. Both Dante and his housemate went missing the day they were let out at their new place. The other cat showed up at the former home within a couple of days, but Dante did not show up. Dante was missing for one week when I was called.

I came out the next morning, and as I was parking my van, Dante's person came over and said that Dante has showed up back at home in the last hour!

"Sadie", Light Brindle, English Mastiff, Napa - Found!

This is an email I received on April 28, 2011, as a follow up to Sadie's search:

"I just want to thank you for all of your experience in tracking Sadie. Even though we didn't find her for a week after she disappeared, you help us educate our neighbors as well as ourselves. It was a real pleasure meeting you and your dog. I would recommend you and your dogs any day to anyone to help locate a missing pet. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Our family is back together and very happy. Danielle Dulle, Napa, California"

Sadie is a three year old, spayed, light brindle 130 lb. English Mastiff. She is wearing her collar with full ID tags and is microchipped.

She was let out into her front yard by accident by a rooommate, and she walked away from the house. I was called a couple of days after she went missing.

Generally, Sadie could be described as hesitant and afraid about approaching strangers, which contributed to her length of being lost. When she was spotted, it was documented that she would not approach anybody, and would run when approached by people.

The GPS tracking was having a hard time in some areas due to the remoteness of the tracking, so the maps may not be 100% accurate, but they are very close.

We started the search about one block from her home where she was spotted, and from there the track led in some pretty darn remote and isolated areas, including horse pastures, open spaces, wineries, and a lot more. By the end of the first day, we found Sadie had come back to near the house and walked right past it. We ended there due to the lack of light and tired searchers. We came back the next morning.

During this search, we did have a sighting of Sadie, but it was the day before. We did go to that spot and restart the track from there since that was more current than the track we were following, which was the day she went missing. We were able to cut off about three days from the track. Strangely enough, the sighting was only a couple of blocks from her home, and she was seen walking down the middle of the street in the middle of the day.

The unbelievable part was that Sadie was so big and nobody was seeing her, even though large parts of where we were tracking her was on open and busy roads.

One suggestion I said was to have dog food and her person's clothing put out directly in front of her home and on the corner (the house is on the corner of a busy street where we know Sadie had walked) to coax her back to her home. Her person said that he stayed just inside the house all night, but that she never came by.

Ignore the part of track two that leads all the way back to San Leandro. I had forgotten to stop the track, and it tracked me all the way back home.

Today we restarted from where we left off, and even though there were new spots we went to, there was also parts that were repeated, like the winery.

We continued for several more hours following her in various directions. At about 4 PM that afternoon, I had to call it off because Dino was exhausted and I didn't want to push him further.

We got back to the cars, and they said they would continue to look for Sadie.

The following day I received a voicemail that Sadie had been found! She had returned to one of the horse ranches we visited the first day, about four blocks from her home. We had left a flyer with the very elderly woman. The woman had seen Sadie on her driveway and in her yard. She called the phone number on the flyer, and Sadie's people were there to pick her up in minutes. She jumped right into the truck when they put down the tailgate.

"Rosy", Grey Tabby, DMH, Santa Rosa

Rosy is an indoor/outdoor five year old DMH grey tabby with green eyes. She is wearing a blue collar with a bell and is microchipped. She had been missing for two months when I was called. However, there were possible sightings of Rosy in the surrounding area of a couple of blocks surrounding the home. Rosy's person did not believe that the sightings were accurate because she felt that if Rosy was that close to home, she would come home. There was a possible sighting of Rosy just a couple of days prior to me coming out, and the location was within a block of the home.

Rosy's person had moved out of the home a couple of months prior to Rosy disappearing, but she had left Rosy with her former roommate because her temporary housing situation did not allow cats.

We went to the location of the current sighting, which posed it own challenges. The sighting was across a creek, and the person stood on the walking trail on the other side. The bushes where Rosy was seen was very thick, and not strong enough to support mine or Dino's weight, but there would be no problem supporting the weight of a seven pound cat. In addition, there was no way that a human could access that side of the creek. I tried to find a way, but the whole side was fenced off. I did not think that Rosy would jump the creek, which was several feet wide.

We checked the yards of the houses on the same side of where Rosy was seen and we did find her track coming out of the yard that was directly behind where she was seen. We checked the yard, and there was definitely space for a cat to come through the chain link and wooden fence. Plus, this house only had another indoor only cat, and there was a broken board in the side gate, which is where we got the scent coming out from.

We found the track leading down the street, around an empty lot and then back out past her house and then out onto the walking trails along the creek and then from there went into other neighborhoods, and then back to the neighborhood of the house.

After several hours, Rosy's person called off the search. She was clearly disappointed that we did not come upon Rosy while on the search. I gave her a wide variety of techniques to keep looking for Rosy and how to get the word out.

"Dillon", Orange Tabby, DLH, San Francisco - Found!

Dillon is a two year old, indoor/outdoor DLH orange tabby. He does not have a collar, and he does not have a microchip. He was missing for almost one week when I was called.

We had a search scheduled the next day for early afternoon.

I drove to San Francisco, and parked my car. Before I even got out of the car, I received a call from Dillon's person that Dillon had returned home and was at the back door. He had just returned from checking the shelter, and arrived home to find Dillon at the back door.

"Kiko", Brown and Black, Yorkshire Terrier, Stockton

Kiko is a two year old Yorkshire Terrier. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped. He escaped from his yard when the gate got left open by accident. Both dogs in the house got out. The first dog was found soon after Kiko's people returned home to find both dogs gone.

I did a phone consultation where we reviewed everything in the case from beginning to present time. There were positive sightings of the dog near the home, and somebody saw the dog picked up by a person they thought was from the skateboard park a couple of blocks away. A person of that description was found, but he denied having Kiko.

Kiko's person said she would keep looking for him.

"Benny", Chihuahua mix, Black with white, Salinas

Benny is a nine pound black with white Chihuahua mix. He has long legs, unlike a lot of short legged Chi mixed we saw running loose in Salinas. He is not wearing a collar and does not have a microchip. He was let out into his fenced yard early Monday morning, but managed to push aside several blocks that prevent him from crawling under the large rolling gate. There were no sightings of him. I was called out about one week after he went missing.

I forgot to start the mapping/tracking software for about one half hour after we started.

The track we found led away from his home and all the way to a 101 North highway entrance. Here the track was kind of erratic as it went onto the entrance, then backed away, then turned left and then right back over the entrance and continued up the road and away. It appears Benny was by himself at this point.

The track continued all the way to the other side of Salinas, through a massive lettuce farm and all the way out to Old Stage Road, which, as it turns out, isn't to Old Stage. We discovered it was a very busy commuter road. However, there was very little shoulder along the way. We went as far as possible until it got dark at 5 PM and got too unsafe to walk on the road.

They asked me to come back the next day.

There were definite overlapping signs that Benny may either still be by himself or with someone. The signs are very similar.

Day #2:

We continued along the track the next day.

The roads were very similar to the previous day. Farms and fields for miles and miles in every direction, but we were still in Salinas. I had no idea how massive and spread out Salinas was.

Once we got off of the main farms road and went directly into the shopping center via foot paths and not driveways, and straight toward a recycling center, I was convinced that Benny had been picked up and was with somebody. I told this to Benny's people. I said I was not sure where the pick up had occurred, but it could have been anywhere along the road or fields that day or the previous.

After we left the shopping center, we were along roads that led directly to remote neighborhoods and trash cans were all along the sides of the roads. Since the search we were currently on was Tuesday, and they would have been passing in that same area about last Tuesday.

The track led all the way down to Highway One, where it crossed over the freeway and up a steep road to an area that was all fields and farms for miles without a human in sight. Honestly, that place was very spooky and eeriey. There was trash tucked on the edges of the weeds and bushes and the area had a lot of activity by people just sitting around. Benny's scent was all over the place. It took me and Dot about three rounds of checking all the ways out until we found the most current scent, which led back down the same road. This tells me they spent several hours in this one spot, probably in the middle of the night where they couldn't be detected. However, that is a one way road for vehicles. So that confirmed that we were not following somebody in a vehicle.

After making a u turn on One and got back to that road, we picked up the track again and it continued back up the previous road down. Here Benny's person stopped the search. She was frustrated that she didn't feel we would catch up to these people, especially since we were a week behind. She said they would keep looking for Benny.
