"Betsy," DSH, White with Grey Tabby Patches, Hayward

Still Missing as of November 6, 2012

_________________________________________________________

Betsy is an indoor only, five year old, nine pound, grey and white DSH. She is not wearing a collar and she is not microchipped.

She escaped from the house when a window fan accidentally fell out of the window in the middle of the night and Betsy jumped out. Betsy had been missing for less than 48 hours when I arrived.

Prior to my arrival, there were no sightings of Betsy. As we were out talking to neighbors and finding her scent on the block, we did find a neighbor who had seen Betsy the previous day down the street. We went to that spot and did find Betsy's scent and followed it throughout Hayward and into the downtown area.

Since Betsy's person had not been to any animal shelter to look for her, he was very interested in visiting the shelters soon to see if she was there. He called off the search at the three  hour mark and we walked home, which still gave him time to get to the local shelters in Hayward and Dublin.

"Arya, Golden Retriever/Chow mix, Golden, San Francisco - Found!

I received a text a few days after the search that Arya had been found still running loose with the leash dragging.

___________________________________________________________________

Arya is an eight year old, 35 pound, Golden Retriever/Chow mix. She is wearing a purple collar with tags and is microchipped. She was being walked by a dog walker in San Francisco when she got scared and ran off. Her person was on vacation out of the country.

She was last seen at the Palace of Fine Arts.

We started the search from there and found the track leading away, along Marina Blvd to Fort Mason, along Bay Street, to the Embarcadero, and all the way eventually to the Financial District of San Francisco.

The search was called off at the four hour mark. They said they would continue to look for her.

Over the next few days Arya was spotted several times, and numerous people were working to catch her.

"Teco," Maltese, White, Richmond

Still missing as of November 6, 2012

____________________________________________________________________

Teco is a eight year old, un-neutered, 7 pound, all white Maltese. He is not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped.

He was let out to roam the neighborhood and visit a local park, as was the normal routine, but one morning he did not come home. There was a single sighting by a neighbor of Teco at a local small park.

We did find the track leading away from the park and then throughout Richmond for many miles. We continued to follow the track until Teco's person called off the search at the four hour mark. He said his family would continue to look for Teco.

"Cuco," DLH, Buff, Half Moon Bay

Still Missing as of November 6, 2012

_________________________________________________________________

Cuco is a neutered, indoor/outdoor, 10 pound, nine year old Buff colored DLH. He is not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped. He lives in a place that is extremely remote and surrounded by open space and miles and miles of hills and canyons in every direction.

His person went away for 24 hours and left the front door open for Cuco to come and go. When his person got home the next day, Cuco was no where around. Due to the terrain, they were convinced that  he had been carried away and killed by a predator.

We found the track leading away from the house and throughout the very large property. During this time, we had no cell phone services, but Cuco's person said he was 100% familiar with the property and knew exactly where we were.

After three hours, the track turned on the property of another neighbor. Cuco's person attempted to make contact with the neighbor to get permission to be there, but we could not find anybody. We were forced to walk back to the house, which took us another half hour and downhill the whole way on rough fire roads.

He said he and his wife would continue to look for Cuco. I recommended to look for Cuco outside the property and post signs up along all the roads in the area since he said they had not informed anybody outside the property that their cat was missing. He said they were convinced that Cuco was dead or hiding nearby.

Dino Wins Honorable Mention in National Search and Rescue Contest!

"Afor," DSH, Gray, Sunnyvale - Found!

I received an email one week after the search that Afor had been found just a few houses away from his home. His person insisted that Afor was there the whole time, and never traveled where we tracked him. This person was never on the search with me and his wife, and I explained to his wife that since Afor was an experienced outdoor cat back in Isreal, that he had the capability, skills and tools to make it back, especially since the track we followed during the four hours led us back toward their home before they called off the search at the four hour mark.

_______________________________________________________________

Afor is an indoor/outdoor, neutered, three year old, 14 pound, solid grey DSH. He is microchipped, but not wearing a collar.

His family recently relocated from Israel, and Afor was still being kept inside, but found a broken window screen and escaped. He had been missing for only a couple of days when I was called to help.

Since we did not know how Afor took off from the property, we had to check the entire block first. Then we found the track leading away from nearby their home. From there it took off away from the neighborhood. To me, it appeared that Afor was chased away from the area near to his home, which would make sense since he was brand new to the area, and the other territorial animals would chase he away after discovering him.

The search was called off at the four hour mark by his person, and she said she would continue to look for Afor.

"Titan," German Shepherd, Sable, Lafayette

Still missing as of November 6, 2012

Titan is an un-neutered, year and half old Sable German Shepherd. He is not microchipped and not wearing a collar.

He had been missing for a couple of days by the time I got to the search. It was unknown how Titan got out of the yard. The fence is six plus feet tall around the whole yard, and the gate, which was unlocked, was found open when his person got home at the end of the day. There were no sightings of Titan after he went missing.

His people believed he was stolen since there were no sightings of Titan, even though they said he was aloof and cautious of strangers.

We found the track leading away from the house, down the street and immediately onto a local hiking/biking trail that leads away from the area. The track led for several miles away from the home. After about six hours, they called off the search and said they would continue to look for Titan on their own.

"Smudge," DSH, Tortoise Shell, Carmel

No maps due to GPS problems on the coast.

Still missing as of November 6, 2012

Smudge is a one year old, indoor/outdoor, female Tortoise shell DSH.  She is microchipped, but she is not wearing a collar. She had been missing almost two weeks by the time I was called.

She was let out one morning, but did not come home.

There were two sightings of Smudge within the first week of being missing and within a few blocks of her home.

We went to the most current sighting and picked up her track leading away from the area. We followed her for several miles all over the area. Her person called off the search at the 3.5 hour mark, saying she would continue to look for Smudge.

"Poppy," Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Red and White, Castro Valley - Found!

My notes:
I got an email today (9/16) that said that Poppy had been found! She said that a neighbor of her's called her to say that she had come home and found Poppy was sitting on her front lawn. This dog made it back to the place she had only lived in for a very short time. I was told they were taking her to the vet tonight for a check up. She had been missing for over a week.

________________________________________________________

Poppy is an eight year old, 20 pound, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. When she went missing she was not wearing a collar and she was not microchipped.

Poppy had been recently brought into CKCS rescue out of Redding when her person went into a senior living facility and could no longer care for Poppy. The foster person picked up her there and drove her back to Castro Valley. She was there for 30 days, and just "starting to approach us in a friendly manner." Poppy was very shy and aloof to everybody around her.

According to the foster family, "Poppy mysteriously disappeared from the completely fenced back yard without a trace." All kinds of things were speculated like being "picked up by an eagle and carried away" to being stuck in one of the many buildings and sheds on the rural property. Multiple searches of the yard and house had been performed, but no Poppy.

I checked the yard and buildings myself, and found no Poppy, except for two very small holes in the base of two of the fences, but I did not think that a 20 pound dog could squeeze her way through.

At the time Poppy went missing, the house cleaner was inside, and the three dogs, including Poppy, were outside in the fenced back yard. I asked if the house cleaner ever opened up the back yard door to clean, and I was told, "yes." I asked if the house cleaner every opened up the front door to clean, and I was told, "yes." OK. If Poppy saw the back door open, she could have run inside to hide without the cleaner knowing. It was a relatively big house, and they confirmed that was possible. I asked, "What if Poppy, after getting inside the house, saw the front door open at one point, and ran out?" They confirmed that was definitely possible.

I brought Dino around to both sides of the yards and showed him the holes in both fences, then I showed him up and down the street, and then I showed him the front door. I brought him to the middle of all this, out in front of the house, and said, "search." He immediately turned and went straight down the street, and make a right at the end, and continued down Redwood Blvd, to Castro Valley Blvd, and made a right and walked all the way down to where CV Blvd meets Mission Blvd and made a left. The track continued around and around for another hour, and then the search was called off by her people. They said they would continue to look for her.

"E Or," Long Hair Chihuahua, White with Brown, Exeter, CA

_____________________________________________________________

E-Or is an adult, white, long coated five pound Chihuahua. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped. E-Or is very, very shy, nervous and reserved around everybody except for his immediate family.

E-Or was last seen by the house cleaner as he was running out the back door. According to his people, in the past, when E-Or gets scared, he has run to a back shed on the five acre property. The husband looked for E-Or there, but did not find him. A search of the local area did not yield any sightings.

We found his track leaving the property through the front gate, which was open. From there he went across the street to another property and then continued down the rural road, going in and out of many properties. Eventually, he crossed a major highway and continued down the road, which turned into miles and miles of larger ranches and orchards in every direction.

At the end of the first day, the track went into another fenced and gated orchard. We made contact with the property owner and asked to come back first thing in the morning to continue the search, which we did.

The second day led us through more orchards and small towns mile after mile. Still, there were no sightings. Due to the intense heat and that Dino appeared extremely tired and that I still had a several hour drive home for my continued search with Iris in the morning, we stopped the search after the four hour mark. At that point, the track was still on orchards, quarries, open roads and in between small towns. Due to his personality, it would not be unusual for E-Or to not approach anybody. Originally, a couple of years ago, he was found running loose, and was found in very bad shape. I advised that they continue to put up flyers in all the surrounding small towns to let people know he is missing in case they see him, and they can call his people directly.
