"Nara," Korean Jindo, San Francisco - Found!

On June 1, 2012, I received the following text:

"I found Nara at 5 AM today.

Where was she found?

Mallard Lake. I set a trap. I BBQ'd for four hours across from the lake. Then I crossed the street to secluded beach on the lake and took off all my clothes. I left them there with some bbq. I came back before dawn and found raccoons scavaging. Then she came out of the bushes."

Nara is a brown with grey, two year old Korean Jindo. She is wearing a collar with ID tags and she is microchipped.

She escaped by accident out the front door while a roommate was moving in. There were a couple of sightings of Nara in Golden Gate Park, about two blocks from her home.

"Valentine", Beagle, Tri-color, Duncans Mills - Found!

___________________________________________________________

I received the following thank-you note from Valentine's family:

"July 25, 2012

Dear Jackie,

Thanks so much for all your help those five days we spent on our searches.

Valentine is safe at home and doing great, like she never missed a beat!

Thanks also to Dino and his hard work!

Best Wishes,

Karin and Shawn O’Connell"

Found! June 22, 2012!

I received a text that Valentine had been found today! She was found back in Duncan's Mills, back at the house she went missing from. She was still wearing her collar with tags and she was dragging about two feet of her Flexi leash cord. She had lost about half her weight, but was otherwise in good shape.

_____________________________________________________________

Valentine is a two year old tri-colored spayed Beagle. When she went missing she was wearing a collar with ID tags and she is microchipped.

She had only been in her current home for a few months after being adopted through Beagle Rescue, and the rescue group got her from a laboratory that was releasing a few of their dogs used in experiments.

This was her first trip to Duncans Mills. She was tied up with a leash when she got scared by a loud noise and took off, dragging her leash behind her. The family members saw her run off and attempted to find her, but could not.

We were brought up the next day and found the track leading away from the house to the right, facing the house. It went around and around one specific house and also appeared to go behind the house. Then the track led back past the house where she was tied up and straight down Freezeout Road, across River Road and into a large cattle ranch in Duncans Mills.

Below are the GPS maps of all five days when we tracked her throughout Duncans Mills, toward Jenner, out to Goat Rock Beach, up Willow Creek Road, all the way to Occidental, a trip of many, many, many miles. From there she went through Occidental, all the way to Freestone, out to Bodega, in and around Bodega and back through the town, heading out toward Valley Ford. From here we tracked her onto several large ranches all around the area.

The last track led onto a private ranch and into a pasture with cows and babies. We made contact with the ranch owner, who was super, super friendly even though we were contacting her on early Sunday morning, but she said we were not allowed into the pasture since the cows were aggressive toward humans and animals with their babies. We did check a couple of gates from that pasture to see if a track led out, but Dino said "No" to each gate. This meant that she existed from another part of the pasture, which we were not able to follow up on since we did not have access to the original pasture.

At this point, after five days of searching and over three weeks time, we stopped the search. Valentine's person said she would call me if another sighting was told to her. All this time, we were following the track continuously from day to day without a single interruption in the track.

It was unclear where she lost her leash since it was never found. However, when she was found, she was dragging about two feet of her former leash behind her, so that tells me that somewhere along the way, she chewed off her leash after being stuck. My best guess is that it was chewed off behind the house, down the road when she was initially lost. It was a thickly wooded area, and it appeared she went back pretty far into the woods.

"Gracie," Siamese, Seal Point, Belmont - Found!

Gracie is an indoor only 10 year old Seal Point Siamese. She is not wearing a collar and she is not microshipped.

She was left outside by accident on the second story porch. There were no sightings of Gracie after she went missing.

Gracie was found over six weeks later after she went missing. The way I found out was through an online review website. Apparently, Gracie's person never believed she ever left the ground level parking lot of the apartment building.

"Charlie," Cattle Dog Mix, Red and White, Belmont - Found!

We did not have a search scheduled for Charlie since I was already on a search and out of town the next day, but emailed back and forth those two days.

Charlie was visiting the area with a relative while his people were out of town. He was left in a car at a store with the windows down and Charlie jumped out.  (Tip: Never, ever leave a dog in a car with the windows down. This invites thieves and the dogs jumping out of the car.)

Charlie was missing from Wednesday to Sunday, and was found still running loose Sunday afternoon.

"Casper," DSH, Black with White, Cupertino -Found!

Casper is a two year old, neutered, indoor/outdoor, black and white DSH. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped.

He was last seen by the husband around 8 AM Monday morning. The only sighting of Casper was in a neighbor's yard later in the same morning. This is a house that Casper regularly visits. We started our search from there.

The track led to a local recreation/farm area where a lot of local events are held. It was only a few blocks from Casper's home. It appeared that Casper was there on a regular visit. However, it also appeared that something happened while Casper was there because the track leading out of the farm, back to his home, suddenly turned around and ran back into the farm. From there the track zig zagged all around the farm and then shot out of the farm. From there the track led around Cupertino and, eventually, into Sunnyvale. The search was stopped at 8:30 PM when it was dark. That was Friday night.

I received an email on Sunday afternoon that Casper suddenly returned home, walking through his cat door.

"From: Sapphire Fein
Subject: Casper is home!
Date: May 20, 2012 7:32:39 AM PDT
To: Jackie Phillips

Ms. Phillips,

We wanted to let you know Casper is home!

Thank you to you and Dino for helping us out. He came in through the cat door this morning!

Sapphire Fein"

My guess is that Casper was picked up inside the farm/recreation area and carried away. His person said that Casper is generally not friendly toward strangers and does not allow people to hold him. Probably he was forcibly grabbed and put into a bag/backpack. Eventually, Casper got away and made his way back home. He was gone for a one week.

"Timmy," DSH, White with Black, San Jose - Found!

Update as of June 22, 2016.
I received a voicemail from Timmy's mom that he had been found last Thanksgiving in a trap in the San Jose area. He was taken to animal control and identified through his microchip!

_________________________________________________________________

Timmy is an indoor/outdoor, 10 month old, black with white DSH. He is not wearing a collar, but he is microchipped.

He was last seen at approximately 10 PM as he left the house. He never returned in the morning. There were no sightings of Timmy after he disappeared.

The track we found appeared to immediately start from in front of his house and then take off down the street.

There are a lot of similarities to a cat being carried by a human and a cat walking on their own. Within the hour of the start of the track, it appeared more and more that Timmy had been picked up and was being carried by somebody. That person, most likely, was a transient, coming through his neighborhood in the middle of the night, when Timmy disappeared.

By the second day, it was quite possibly that Timmy had been given to another person, different than the one who originally picked him up. That was evident due to the fact that on the second day, the track led straight up El Camino, all the way to Palo Alto, which is where the track was stopped at the four hour mark because Timmy's person had a class to get to at 1 PM.

She said she would continue to look for Timmy.

Grady is an indoor only, nine year old, 10 lb. solid grey DSH. He is wearing a blue collar with an ID tag and he is microchipped.

He got out of the house by accident when a roommate let a door open for a few minutes.

There were several possible sightings of Grady, but only one person confirmed the blue collar, and it was known that another grey cat similar to Grady also lived in the area. We started at the only sighting that was definite she saw a blue collar on this cat.

We followed the track for many miles, and the search was stopped at the four hour minimum by Grady's person. He said he would continue to look for him.

"Abby," Pomeranian, Black, Vallejo - Found!

Abby is a six year old, six lb. all black Pomeranian with a grey muzzle. She is not wearing a collar and does not have a microchip.

Abby got loose when a roommate was moving out of the house and Abby bolted from the door and down the street. There were several sightings of Abby in the neighborhood.

Abby is, per her person, terrified of all people and rarely ever leaves the house. She had only been in this home for a couple of months. Prior to that she had lived with a relative of her current home.

We followed Abby's track for two days, several hours each day. There were several homeless camps and a lot of following in the same areas over and over. We stopped the search at the request of Abby's person.

I received an email several days later saying that Abby had been found. I emailed back three times asking where and when Abby had been found, but I never received a response.
