"Dinki," Buff Tabby, DSH, Berkeley

__________________________________________________________________
Dinki is an indoor only male 19 year old buff tabby DSH. He is wearing a collar, but he is not microchipped. He is on a couple of medications for chronic old age health issues.

He was last seen, under normal circumstances, in a next door neighbor's yard at 8 PM on a Wednesday.

There was one sighting of Dinki the next Friday afternoon in a yard several blocks away. However, the woman who saw him in her yard did not know he was missing at the time. She didn't see the flyer on her street until the next day when she called. By then Dinki was gone, and she left out of town for several days.

After checking the entire perimeter, we found the track leading away from the house and continued eventually for blocks and blocks, eventually getting all the way to the area of the University. It does appear, based on the track, that Dinki was carried away, especially since his person described him as very friendly to strangers. However, once we got to the University, the track then changed to become very sporadic and choppy, like he was now loose and on his own.

I explained all this to Dinki's person, but she made it clear she did not believe Dino was following Dinki's track, and she suggested we return to the last know sighting or her home and look for the track again.

She said she would continue to look for him.

"Sandy," Thai Ridgeback mix, San Jose

_____________________________________________________________________

Sandy is a six month old, un-spayed, brown and black, Thai Ridgeback mix. She is not wearing a collar because she slipped out of it while being walked by a relative when her person was at work. She is microchipped. Since she is so young, Sandy is shy and reserved around strangers.

Sandy was lost for one week when I was called, and there were no sightings of her after she went missing.

We found a track leading out and away from the area that went on for several miles, throughout San Jose, eventually all the way to the San Jose Airport. Her person had to get to work in the afternoon, so the search was stopped at the four hour mark.

He said he would continue to look for her.

"Sam," Beagle, Martinez

Still missing as of December 18, 2013

______________________________________________________________________

Sam is an eight year old, 27 pound, tri-colored Beagle. He is wearing a collar, but it does not have tags on it, and he is not microchipped.

Sam got out of a side gate by accident. He was noticed missing about three hours later when his family got home. He was missing for three days when I was called. There were no sightings after he went missing.

We found a track leading away from the area and down a street and then it went for several miles around various parts of Martinez. At one point, the track went into a large rural section with open space, horse property and large parcels. The property owner would not allow us access to the property, so, instead, we had to check the entire perimeter of the area, where we eventually found a track leading out. We don't know how long Sam was in the area, but the section was extremely extensive with creeks, horses, open space and private property. The search was stopped on the first day due to lack of daylight. We continued on the second day where we left off.

The second day led us all the way down to the Martinez Marina and more open space with railroad private property. From there the track eventually went to a large public park, which borders on large private property. We were not allowed to cross the border, but Sam did. Instead, we went back around to the street with the houses on the property. We asked around the area, showing the residents the map and the gate. We did find out who owned the largest piece and got permission to enter the property. After all that, which took about an hour, from the gate to getting permission to enter the property, I showed Dino the whole area of streets and houses surrounding the open space where Sam entered, and we did find a track leading out and back down.

The search was stopped by Sam's person after several hours, who had another appointment to get to with her son in the afternoon. She said she would continue to look for him.

"Toby," Chihuahua, Tan, Foster City

Still missing as of August 24, 2013

_____________________________________________________________________

Toby is a tan twelve pound seven year old Chihuahua. When he went missing he was not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped.

When I was called he was missing for three days, and there were no sightings.

We followed the track for eight hours around Foster City. We had to stop the search due to lack of daylight at 8 PM.

As we were waiting for our ride to pick us up, Toby's person received a phone call that Toby had been sighted earlier that day at around 1 PM. The person gave only a general location, but did not give a specific location, which is what we would need to start. Once I explained this, Toby's person called this person back, but by the time we arrived back at our cars, the person had not called back. Toby's people said that they would go to the location and look for Toby there. After I had already put Dino in the car, taken off his equipment, given him his food reward and removed my own equipment, the husband asked me to come along with them to continue the search. By this time it was pitch black, I was exhausted and hungry, and I explained that I had dogs waiting in crates at home that needed to come out since we had just done an eight hour search and I needed to get home right away. I offered to come back in the morning when it was light and after they got a more exact location from this person. He got angry and said that I did not care about his dog and that I was only doing the searches for money, and turned around, still angry, and got into his car.

First thing the next morning, I texted him and asked him if he was interested in continuing the search. He said he was, but he still had not heard from the person who called the night before to give a more specific location to her sighting. I said that I needed that to do another search.

I then received a text asking if I would be willing to do a search, but charge less than the minimum four hours. I said that all searches need a four hour minimum. I asked me a couple of more times if I would change, and I said no. About a half hour later I received a phone call from his wife, basically, demanding that I do a search with less than the four hour minimum, charging me with not caring about their dog and only doing the search for money. I did not return the message, and I never heard back from them. To this date, Toby is still missing.

"Sparkles," Desert Tortoise, Davis

Still Missing as of August 24, 2013

______________________________________________________________________

Sparkles is a 13 year old desert land tortoise. He is approximately 13'' long x 9" wide x 8" tall when he stands. He weights about 18 pounds.

He went missing from his home sometime between 4 AM and 8 AM. There was a late night party on Friday night at the home, and, apparently someone left a door open and Sparkles walked out. When his person woke up and left the house at 8 AM, she did not look for Sparkles, which was not uncommon. When she got home later that day, and searched the house for him, he was nowhere around. An immediate search of the home and the surrounding gardens and landscaped areas did not find him. There are no fences in the area, so once he got out, he was free to go anywhere.

Even though an extensive search was done of the area and flyers were posted everywhere, there were no sightings of Sparkles anywhere.

We checked the entire area for over an hour, but did not find Sparkles anywhere in the area, but we did find a track leading out of the area. We followed the track for a few more miles, when it was called off by his person due to lack of daylight.

We came back the next day to where we left off, which was an agricultural area, full of very large farms, mile after mile after mile in every direction. His track went through these field, then came out, and found another field and went into it. Unfortunately, this person was extremely unfriendly and would not allow us to come onto the property. Sparkles person said she would come back and try to talk to her on her own without a tracking dog and people in reflective vests, which obviously was upsetting this person.

This person had only had Sparkles for a short time. He was adopted from an elderly person who could no longer care for him. After more research and talking to reptile and tortoise groups to inform them he was missing, his person learned that desert tortoises can be extremely mobile and cover large distances.

She said she would keep looking for him.

"Marley," Solid Black, DMH, Woodacre

___________________________________________________________

Marley is a two year old, all black, DMH with green eyes. He is not wearing a collar and he is not microchipped.

He was last seen by a family member in their back yard. Marley got scared by a loud sound and he ran toward a side fence and jumped it around 4 PM on a Wednesday.

Marley was missing for one week when I was called.

The track we found led away from the area and through some very thick and steep hillsides, up and down trails and eventually back into town. The track went around the town and back up some side streets. The search was stopped at five hours per the request of Marley's person.

She said she would continue to look for Marley.
