Lukas is a four year old Yorkshire Terrier. He was staying with his person's mom. The mom went out of town for a couple of days and had a neighbor come by to feed Lukas and the other dog. While the caretaker was at the house, Lukas slipped out the front door. He is microchipped and wearing a collar with ID tag. The number on the tag was the cell phone of the wife of Lukas's person, who was out of the country with her cell phone. Lukas' person confirmed that if somebody tried to call that number, it would state that the number they are trying to reach is out of the service area.
There had been no sightings of Lukas or phone calls since he went missing. I was called on a Saturday, but was not available to do their search until Wednesday due to a full schedule. I did recommend that they get that cell phone number forwarded to another cell phone number that is local. He said he would work on it.
I received a call from Lukas' person that Lukas had been found. He had been picked up about a mile from the house he disappeared from. The person who picked him up lived in Modesto, and was traveling through the area. She told Lukas' person that she had arrived on the scene after Lukas was hit by a car, and she took Lukas to Modesto with her, apparently telling the people at the scene that Lukas was her's and she had been out looking for him. She said she called the number on the tag several times, but only received the "out of service area" message. She said she never took Lukas to a vet because she thought they would put him to sleep due to his injuries. She said she checked him for a microchip and never found one. She never posted any ads, nor contacted any shelter or vets anywhere in Marin.
My belief was that she wanted to keep Lukas.
